Ester Ramirez-Cepeda, MD
After four years of practice at Darien Pediatrics, Stamford pediatrician Dr. Ester Ramirez founded Summer Pediatrics in 2008. Since opening her own practice, she’s seen a steady increase in patients whose parents are drawn to her warmth, openness and wealth of knowledge on childhood illnesses
The youngest of 12 children, Dr. Ramirez-Cepeda is a native of the Dominican Republic. She earned her medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra School of Medicine (PUCMM) and completed her residency in pediatrics at the world-renowned Mt. Sinai Medical School and Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, N.Y. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“I enjoy seeing children grow, and I especially love caring for newborns and watching how they develop in the first year,” says Dr. Ramirez-Cepeda. “Parents are the main player in the development of their child and should always be the ones making the decisions. I view my role as a reliable medical partner and advisor, someone who helps parents make the best decisions based on my examinations and recommendations.”
In addition to being a pediatrician, Dr. Ramirez-Cepeda is a mom to Sarah, Lucas, and Sofia. As the mother of young children, she has a better understanding of the health care concerns and needs of today’s children and parents.
Sofia Chiocconi, MD, FAAP
After working at Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Sofia Chiocconi joined Summer Pediatrics in July of 2017.
The second of 6 children, Dr.Chiocconi is a native of Patagonia, Argentina. She earned her medical degree at the University of Buenos Aires and completed her residency in pediatrics at Hospital Pedro de Elizalde “Casa Cuna” in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
After moving to the United States, she trained at the world-renowned Mt. Sinai Medical School and Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, N.Y. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics

In addition to being a pediatrician, Dr. Chiocconi is the mother of two boys, Ignacio and Martin. She enjoys spending her free time doing outdoor activities with them, her Husband, and friends.
Karen Nordberg, MD. FAAP
The oldest of 2 children born to immigrant parents from Santiago, Chile, Karen Plaza Nordberg was born and raised in Long Island, NY. She earned her undergraduate degree from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA and her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. She went on to complete her General Pediatrics residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children also in Philadelphia. She is Board Certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I view myself as a parent partner in solving problems that may develop and hope to always play the supportive role in the care of any child. I truly believe that a parent will always know their child best; I strive to follow their lead and provide them with the medical knowledge necessary to ensure the best care possible.”
Family has always been of utmost importance to Dr. Nordberg and she spends her free time enjoying outdoor activities or participating in community service with her husband and 2 kids, Konur and Emma.
Maria Johnston, APRN FNP-BC
Maria was born and raised in the south of Argentina.
She attended the Catholic University of Argentina and she received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Fairfield University. Later on she achieved her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Sacred Heart University and she is a Board Certified Advanced Practice Nurse. She helped establish a Health Center in the Dominican Republic, and during her free time she enjoys volunteering at Americares, The Fresh Air Fund, and her local church. Maria worked for the Darien Public School System and with a local Pediatrician before beginning her practice at Summer Pediatrics.
“I love working with children and their families, watching them grow and mature while fostering healthy living.”
She enjoys spending time outdoors working in her vegetable garden, taking care of her chickens, and playing tennis. Above all she loves to be with her family. She has four grown children Bobby, Michael, Anne and Lily from whom her love for childcare has grown.
Maria is passionate for her patients and strives to work with all families to provide individualized holistic patient centered care with a focus in preventive medicine.
